This picturesque town (ht.- 1158m) district Head Quarter, is a paradise for the spiritual seeker, the nature lover and the adventure buff alikie.
It is an important pilgrimage center.
It is interesting to note the similarities between Varanasi and Uttarkashi. Both are situated at confluence (Sangam) of the river Varuna and Asi, have the holy Vishwanath Temple, Shakti Temple, Parshuram Temple, Maa Ganga Temple, Kuteti Devi Temple, Vimaleshwar Temple, Bhairav temple, Kalesahwar Temple, Jaipur temple, Mahishasur Mardini Temple, Annapurna Temple and the Manikarnika and Kedar Ghats. One can witness the holy Ganga in a crescent shape at the base of the town. Every year, during the " MAGH MELA" (January 14), people visit Uttarkashi to take a holy dip in Bhagirathi (Ganga) along with the image of their village deity. 'The Neharu Institute of Maountaineering' is situated 5 kms. from the town.
The aim of the Institute is to mountains and nature, through its various mountaineering and adventure training courses. Topograhically, the district is mountainous but a network of roads has made all parts easily accessible.
